Africa produces roughly a quarter of the world's gold, and US buyers are right to want direct access to it. They are also right to be cautious. This guide covers the five steps that separate a real transaction from an expensive lesson.
Only buy from government-regulated mining companies holding a valid export licence. In Ghana, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is the sole authority for gold exports under Act 1140 of 2025 — any Ghanaian offer that bypasses it is not legitimate. Ask for the licence and verify it with the issuing authority, not with documents the seller sends you.
A real counterparty has a registered company number you can look up, a published office address, and a phone number that answers. Maisha Trading LLC is a US-registered company (Proof No. W27707520) based in Bowie, Maryland — your contract and your recourse sit under US law.
Advance-fee fraud is the most common scam in this trade: "export taxes", "clearance fees", "insurance deposits". Legitimate sellers do not need your money to ship their gold. Our terms: payment only after the gold is assayed at your own refinery and the content is verified.
Provenance documents, export permits, assay reports and chain-of-custody records should reach you before the metal moves. If a seller cannot produce paperwork in advance, there is no parcel.
Serious buyers and sellers both pass Know Your Customer screening: identity, company registration, beneficial ownership, proof of funds, sanctions checks. A counterparty that objects to KYC is telling you something.
No. Buying gold from Africa is legal when the seller is a licensed exporter and the shipment carries proper export documentation. What is illegal — and what enforcement agencies pursue — is unlicensed export, smuggled gold, and trade with sanctioned parties. Working through a US-registered company that sources only from government-regulated, export-licensed mines keeps you on the right side of both US and source-country law.
Buy through a US-registered company, verify the mining partner's export licence with the issuing authority, insist on payment after assay at your own refinery, and never pay upfront fees. Every one of these protections is standard in our contracts.
Both trade internationally. Doré (semi-refined bars straight from the mine) is the most common export form and is refined after delivery; refined bullion commands higher prices. We supply documented doré and bullion parcels to US refineries, dealers, jewellers and investors.
Be careful here. Deep discounts below the world spot price are the classic bait in gold fraud. Legitimate trade happens at or near market price, with margins made on logistics and refining — not on a too-good-to-be-true discount.
Start with our inquiry brief and KYC process. It costs you nothing, commits you to nothing, and tells both sides whether a real transaction is possible.
